Chapter 177

A colorful coral reef expanded in every direction below the water’s surface.Schools of exotic, strangely-shaped fish zoomed this way and that, trying to dodge past Sarah as she adjusted to using the flippers. It was reassuring that there were other tourist groups swimming around the reef with her. The ocean was so massive that she would have felt nervous snorkeling alone. As she made her way through the water, taking in as much of the sea life as she could, she felt someone poke her in the side. Erin gestured frantically for her to follow her. She looked super funny in her big flippers. They made her legs appear extra short and her feet seem extra long.Sarah hoped she didn’t look that strange, too. But part of her guessed she probably did. Erin swam farther into the center of the reef. When Sarah caught up to her, she gazed down through the goggles and gasped. A dark sunken ship lay spilled in several sections across the shallow ocean floor. Several swimmers around Sarah were snapping pictures of the ship using handheld underwater cameras. She saw Erin was busily taking a picture on her waterproof phone. She pushed Sarah into the frame to take her picture with the ship.As Sarah tried to think of an interesting pose, she felt warm fingers trace along the side of her hips. She whipped her head around and came goggles to goggles with Bent. On her other side, Trevor and the two soccer captains squished into frame beside her.Erin gave them a three, two, one countdown with her fingers and snapped the picture. Sarah felt Bent give her a ticklish squeeze before he swam off. Bubbles escaped her lips as she laughed. She hated to be tickled. Erin swam up to her and together, they took another picture. She gave Sarah a thumbs up before drifting back over to the sunken ship. Sarah’s eyes followed a school of skinny yellow fish as they zig-zagged through the broken pieces of ship debris. She wondered how long the ship had been down there. It looked like quite awhile. She recalled reading about various shipwrecks off the coast of Florida. This poor boat and its crew had undoubtedly met their fate in a hurricane. After awhile of swimming, Sarah headed back to the boat. She saw Trevor attempting to catch a particularly beautiful fish with a long flowing tail. Right before he grabbed it, Sarah pushed him with her shoulder, throwing him off-balance. The beautiful fish sped towards Sarah and did a lightning-fast circle around her arm as if to thank her before it sped off. Trevor whipped around. He grinned when he recognized Sarah. It didn’t seem like he even realized she’d purposely shoved him. When Sarah reached the boat, she pulled the snorkel’s mouth piece out of her mouth and pushed the goggles to her forehead. She’d just managed to get a firm grip on the low part of the boat when a strong hand hooked around her wrist and hauled her up and out of the water. She landed hard on her feet, swaying awkwardly in the flippers. It felt weird to be back on solid ground in the boat.Bent’s eyes twinkled as he surveyed her soaking wet suit. He quickly slipped his secret service style sunglasses back on. She thought he was going to say something to her, but he didn’t. He headed back to the driver’s seat and started to thumb through his phone. “Look how cute this picture turned out,” Erin said. She scrambled out of the water. Kicking off her flippers, she shoved her phone in Sarah’s face. The image of Sarah and the boys in front of the sunken ship was cute. They looked like astronauts floating in underwater space. She heard Trevor splashing frantically in the water behind the boat. “A little help here!” he called. It was obvious he couldn’t get himself out of the water. Bent jumped up and made his way to the back of the boat. He gazed down at Trevor, his lips twitching. “Come on, Trevor. Even your girlfriend could get herself out of the water without my assistance,” Bent teased. Trevor made an annoyed remark that Sarah didn’t hear. She was suddenly distracted by Bent’s phone on the driver’s seat. The phone screen was lit up and flashing. She checked that Bent’s back was turned as he continued to torment Trevor in the water. Poking a finger at the phone, she saw the screen hadn’t locked yet. There was an incoming call from Elly. Sarah pushed the button to ‘Decline’, giggling softly. Her thoughts were interrupted by Bent humorously dropping Trevor onto the floor of the boat. Trevor groaned, cursing under his breath. “Thanks a lot, Prince,” he grumbled, righting himself and tugging off his flippers. “But I would’ve greatly preferred to not get bruised up in the process.””Ah, come on,” Bent laughed. “It’s not every day I get to go fishing for Trevors.” Chad and Dan had no trouble getting themselves back into the boat. They looked at Trevor in confusion as he ridiculed everyone for being stronger than he was. “If it helps, Trevor. Bent had to pull me out of the water, too,” Sarah said. Though she wouldn’t have needed Bent’s help. He’d automatically volunteered to assist her. “Thanks. That’s why I call you Sarah Sweet,” Trevor said, smiling at her. Erin punched Trevor’s shoulder. “You’re tougher in other ways, Trev,” she said, winking at him. He pulled her down and kissed her cheek. “Hey, Prince. Can we try out this board?” Chad displayed a large knee board that had been stowed away in a side compartment. “Whoa! I want a go, too,” Dan said, sitting up straighter on the boat seat.Bent shrugged. “Cool by me.” He grabbed a long ski rope and handle and hooked it to a pole in the middle of the boat. “Awesome!” Chad yelled. He jumped into the water with the knee board. He paddled a short distance away and held onto the handle of the rope. “All set!” Chad called. Bent started the engine. Chad slowly climbed onto his knees as the boat picked up speed, balancing himself on the board. He hooted and hollered as the board sped left and right over waves. At one point, he hit a huge wave and went flying. “Chad’s down!” Erin called to Bent. He turned the boat around and circled back over to Chad. “Dude, you got some major air,” Dan told him proudly.Chad grinned. “Your turn, man. I don’t wanna wipe myself out before tonight’s concert.” Dan and Chad switched places. Dan was actually slightly better on the knee board. He lasted almost ten minutes before he wiped out over a large wave. “Anyone else want to knee board?” Bent asked as Dan swam back to the boat. “I’m good,” Erin said, resting her head on Trevor’s shoulder. Sarah smiled at Bent. “I’m not big into knee boarding.” “No problem. We can head over to the beach so everybody can relax,” he said. After they got back to the villa, Erin and Sarah hurriedly reapplied their sunscreen and made sure their temporary tattoos were still in place. Grabbing fresh towels, the group returned to the hotel and out to the gorgeous sandy beach. Sarah and Erin sprawled out in beach chairs that the hotel concierge had already reserved for them. The boys ventured over to play beach volleyball. As Sarah browsed a fashion magazine, she saw a willowy blonde approach Bent. “Well if it isn’t Mr. Prince. It’s been a long time.”
