Chapter 42

I decided to go to my base first.
Axel and Lucius are my guardians so they must have noticed my absence immediately. Death, he might not know about me missing but I know Axel knows for sure. I want to calm his nerves first before going to Death.
It isn’t snowing but it is cold. The building is on a mountain and is quite secluded from the rest of the busy human city below. “I’ll think I’ll stay behind,”
I glance behind at Scarlet. She shifts around nervously. “They know me as Taylor, probably won’t be a good look for me,”
“Yeah…”
Scarlet looks around, swallowing hard. “I’ll see you around then?”
“Sure,” I reply.
She puts her hand in her pocket and gives me one last smile before she disappears. I pray for everything to be smooth for her. She is such a sweet person and she deserves so much more.
I sigh, coming back to reality. I’m on my own now. I take a deep breath and slowly make my way to the steps to the main door. My heart is beating out of my chest.
I thank all that’s holy because the first floor is completely empty. There isn’t a person in sight but I do notice some things are out of place. There’s a couple vases missing and portraits that aren’t there anymore. I find it strange that no one is in the hall. I guess I’m finally catching a break. I could use a nap and wait for everyone to get back.
I have this resolved in my heart as I make my way towards the staircase. As I ascend, I notice some chattering going on above. Ah, that’s where everyone is. It is getting late. I can’t knock the feeling that the voices are so familiar. When I reach the final step, all the chatter ceases.
I peer up through my lashes advancing until I see a face that stops me dead in my tracks.
Felix? He’s here? What is he doing here?
He stares at me back. I barely notice Axel and Lucas standing by him. I rack my brain for what I rehearsed with Scarlet. I can’t even get a single word out. He’s already moving towards me. Felix takes me in his embrace, nearly knocking off my feet. He holds on to me so tightly in front of everyone.
“Where were you? I was looking for you,” he rushes out, his dark eyes scanning my face. It’s like he can’t believe I’m here.”What happened?”
“I don’t know. I was with Axel and then I blacked out. I didn’t have my crystal and I was stranded. Scarlet happened to be on a mission where I was and she saved me,” I lie.
He squints seeing my fabrications on my face. Before he can call me out, I tell him what I feel. “I’ve missed you. I’m sorry for disappearing. I’m sorry for causing all this trouble, I-”
He cuts me off with his lips. He takes me in and kisses me so deeply. He doesn’t care that he’s doing it in front of everyone. He just holds onto me tighter like he’s afraid I’ll disappear again. I melt into him just seconds before he pulls away.
He looks me in the eyes, his forehead resting on mine. “I love you, Anwen. I love you so goddamn much. I’ve never been so scared in my life,”
I find my lower lip trembling “I love you too. I’m sorry,”
“There’s no need to be sorry. You’re not any trouble. You’re not an inconvenience. You’re just the woman I love,” Felix says, his eyes sparkling.
“Felix? Can we try this again?” I say, clutching onto him for balance.
My stomach drops and the world spins as I await his answer. The room goes quiet and my heart beats fast. I peer up with him full of careful hope.
He grins. “Why wouldn’t we?”
