Chapter 56

Intrigued, Sarah got up out of her chair. She reached out her hand to touch the words on the fridge. Suddenly, Erna was in front of her, beeping like crazy. “Is there something you need, Sarah? I am here to help!”Sarah jumped, startled. Her back hit against the fridge. Various magnets fell to the floor. “Oh, I’m sorry,” Sarah said. Her heart rattled around in her chest. She took a breath to calm herself.Sarah quickly picked up the magnets and placed them back onto the fridge. When she searched for her name again, it seemed the magnets were now out of order. If her name had even been there, it was now gone.Sarah spun to face the android. For some reason, she actually wondered if Erna had planned to startle her on purpose. Had Erna known Sarah’s name was on the fridge? Sarah shook her head. No, that was crazy, she decided. The android, or robot, it didn’t actually think. Erna was programmed to help. So that’s all she was doing. At least, that’s what Sarah decided. Sarah went and sat down in her chair again. She strummed her fingers on the shiny counter. She kept glancing back at the fridge, hoping to see her name reappear, spelled-out in the magnets again. Her eyes flitted to Erna who now stood silently in her corner. “Why does Bent call you Erna?” she asked. She recalled asking this question previously but hadn’t received a response. Sarah could hear the android’s mechanical gears shifting around inside its silver, solid frame. “I am named after one of his family members,” Erna replied. Sarah lifted an eyebrow. “Oh, who?” she asked curiously. The android’s blue light eyes blinked. “I am not at liberty to convey that information,” she said. “I see,” Sarah said, feeling a bit deflated. The boy with the beautiful name sure had a lot of secrets. It was not her business to get answers from him or his androids, anyway. But still…it annoyed her that he was such a constant mystery. “So, um, does Bent live alone?” Sarah asked. She felt that was a safe question.Erna nodded her silver head. “Yes he does. His parents are in South Fortland.””Oh!” Sarah gasped. She hadn’t realized he was all alone in the entire country. Cleaning Robot rolled back into the kitchen. Sarah had to move her chair out of the way so the robot could clean under the chair. Then it rolled off into the next room.”How many robots are in this house?” Sarah asked. Erna cocked her head to the side, and snapped it back into place. “There are many kinds here, Sarah.” “Oh, okay. Can I meet another one? Are there any more like you?” She didn’t want to be nosy, but she was awfully curious. Erna pressed a button on her shoulder. Sarah heard the sound of clicking against the marble floors. Soon, an android that looked almost exactly like Erna appeared in the kitchen. This android had a masculine-looking face instead of a female face like Erna’s. “A visitor,” the android said. He bowed. “Please, what are you called?” Sarah giggled. The android was almost handsome. Except that, of course, he wasn’t alive. “I am called Sarah,” she said, laughing. “Nice to meet you, Sarah,” the android replied. “I am Mr. Prince’s other personal assistant. I am called Jay.” The android bowed. Before Sarah could say anything else, she heard another whirring noise. At first she thought it was Cleaning Robot returning. But the sound grew in intensity. Soon, it was practically a roar.Frightened, Sarah put her hands over her ears. She shouted to the androids. “WHAT’S THAT NOISE?” Just then, a large dark object flew past the window. Sarah leaped out of her chair to see what it was. She had to tread carefully to not slip on the somewhat damp floor. As she peered outside, she caught her breath. A jet-black helicopter hovered in the air. It was very close to the house. As she stared in awe, a figure pulled open the helicopter’s side door. To Sarah’s absolute shock, the figure leaped out into the open air. It did a few flips, and landed with a gigantic splash into the glittering pool.
