Chapter 93

Sarah tried to keep her cool as Bent ignored the speed limit. The car sped like a bullet through every intersection and around every turn. She could hardly look out the window. The world around them was practically a blur at the speed they were going. She tried to imagine driving her own Jeep the same way Bent drove this car. There was no way it could handle this kind of impact. Since her Jeep was top heavy, with a lighter center, attempting even one tight turn, at such a high speed, would almost surely cause it to roll and flip over. She shuddered at the thought and checked again to make sure her seatbelt was securely fastened. As they rounded another sharp curve in the road, Sarah let out a small cry.Bent glanced at her, raising an eyebrow. “Nervous?” he teased. Sarah glowered at him. “I don’t know how you drive like this and think it’s fun.” In answer, he pushed down harder on the gas. The car picked up even more speed! Its tires found a slight upward hill in the road. The car was suddenly airborne for several heart-stopping seconds. Sarah screamed in fright. She held her breath and squeezed both sides of the leather seat. She exhaled when she felt the magnificent tires bounce back onto the pavement. “See? That’s what I’m talking about,” she said. “You’re driving like a maniac!” Bent ran a hand through his hair. He leaned way back in his chair and stretched one of his legs up beside the wheel of the car. “Don’t do that!” Sarah shrieked. She wanted to reach over and pull his leg back down. “You’re too uptight,” Bent snickered. Though he did, finally, move his leg off the dashboard. Feeling better now, Sarah tried to relax back against the seat. The music continued to throb loudly around them. She noticed the light ahead had switched from green to yellow. She expected Bent to start slowing the car to a stop. Instead, he hit a button on the wheel. The light in front of them changed from yellow…back to green! Sarah covered her face with her hands as they shot through the light. “That’s cheating!” she hollered, trying to be heard over the music. She watched from the side mirror as all of the other vehicles behind them came to a stop at the now red light. “Do you enjoy breaking rules?” she asked. She hugged her arms to her chest. Bent slapped his hand on the steering wheel, cracking up. “How can you expect me to play by the rules? Literally every piece of machinery I own is programmed with advanced technology.” He pushed a dial to turn down the music. “I tend to think of it more as…sidestepping rules.” He gave her a mischievous grin. Sarah quickly looked away. She didn’t want him to see how much his smile affected her. Already she could feel goosebumps prickle her arms.
