Chapter 97

Lancelot
I woke up from the best sleep I have had in years and to the happiest sight, I could ever have wished for. I was still on Jolene’s couch. She was sleeping with me, her head on my chest. I tightened the embrace I had around her waist. Yesterday, we had stayed up almost all night just talking about our lives, everything, and anything. We had even watched fun videos and laughed like I hadn’t laughed in a long time. I was always so busy. I hadn’t even realized when we fell asleep.
I kissed the top of her head and her eyes fluttered open. She smiled happily before her eyebrows shot up and she jumped away from me. She turned around probably to wipe the trail of saliva from her mouth. When she looked back at me, she didn’t meet my gaze and her cheeks were slightly tinted red. That was cute, but not as cute as her messy hair.
“Just a moment.” She rushed to the bathroom.
Her hair was back to normal when she came back and she looked more refreshed.
“When are you planning to go back to your pack?” She sat down and leaned against me. I couldn’t help but smile when she took my left hand and looked at me with those innocent eyes.
“As soon as you are ready.” To be honest, I wanted to go back as soon as possible. I trusted Samuel, but he was too soft. People relax too much and that is how accidents happen.
“I haven’t unpacked from my trip to India and all my clothes are clean, so I just need to shower and eat something and I am good to go.” She grinned and gave me thumbs up. I love this girl so much.
“I’ll get ready and then, we can have breakfast together.” She nodded with a wide smile on her face.

After having breakfast, we went to say goodbye to Jolene’s friends and family – with that, I am talking about the Alphas and Lunas of the two of the most powerful packs and the Beta of the third one.
We knocked on the door of the Alpha couple of the Blood River Pack. As soon as it was opened, the Luna, Abigail, jumped and pulled Jolene into a hug. “Take care. Come visit me, okay?” She pulled away and smiled warmly at Jolene.
“Sure. I’ll be fine. I’m going with my mate.” Jolene wrapped her arms around my right arm. I loved how she treated me as her mate even when things were still not as good as I would like them to be.
“I entrust you with my dear friend’s safety.” Abigail flashed me a small smile.
“I will. Thank you and Alpha Adam for saving my mate’s life. I am really grateful.” This was the girl that had risked her life for Jolene. Nothing would come close to repay them for that action.
Abigail grinned. “That was just the right thing to do.”
Alpha Adam stood next to his mate, his only acknowledgment in my direction was a stiff nod before turning his attention to Jolene.
“Jolene, if you need anything call me. I hope things go right between the two of you. I expect details.” He winked at her.
That was weird and irritating at the same time. Deep breaths… Deep breaths.
Jolene gave him the stink eye. “Never do that again. It creeps me out.”
Thank you for that, Jolene. I am afraid of the moment in which our bond will be strong enough for her to feel all of my emotions and read my thoughts whenever she wants to. She has never seen my jealous side. I’m always too afraid to lose her to act on those feelings.
He covered his face with a hand. “It was Abigail’s idea. She said that I’m too serious and boring sometimes. I don’t think I am. Am I?” He stared at her with a serious expression. I turned to look at Jolene. I had talked to the guy. He only answered in short sentences and stayed quiet most of the time. But, then again, Jolene had been a little like that the first times we talked. I laughed at the type of conversation those two could have. It would be like the “Four thirty-three” for singers, extended version.
Jolene chuckled nervously. “You? I don’t understand how could someone said that. You are one of my dearest friends and I always enjoy talking to you.”
Jolene, I see what you did there. She didn’t want to lie to him – He would probably figure it out, anyway. Adam was known for being unreadable. He always had a neutral face. It was impossible to tell his thoughts, and he usually talked about nothing but work.
“Thank you, Jolene. Besides Abigail, you are my only close friend.”
Well, I’ll be damned. Alpha Adam just smiled. I glanced at my watch. 11:32 AM. Eleven and thirty-two, my new lucky numbers.
“Well, I didn’t have much choice, right?” Jolene gave him a crooked smile to which he chuckled.
“Are you visiting him before leaving?” Adam tone was serious now.
Who was him? It had taken almost every last bit of my patience to deal with all the guys around my mate. Male names just kept popping out. I trusted her, so I stayed quiet, but do there really had to be so many guys that I don’t know getting close to her? Shh… Deep breaths. Don’t make a jealousy scene.
Jolene shook her head no. “I got my necklace back during the last visit and information about the traitor’s son. I’ll talk to him next time. Anyway, we are leaving now. Bye. I love you both.”

We took the elevator to the first floor.
“Who was he talking about?” I gave Jolene a pointed look.
She gulped but maintained eye contact. “An extremely dangerous informant.” She turned to look at the door while tapping her foot and pretending I wasn’t looking at her now.
Was that everything she had to say? The ding of the elevator signaled that we had arrived and Jolene left as soon as the door opened. She quickly walked to the front door. Why was she so nervous?
“Toby, I’m leaving!” She said as she passed by Alpha Maddox, walked straight to his mate, and hugged her. “The meeting was a success, Vero. Good job.”
Did she ever use titles? I had never seen anyone so relaxed around so powerful werewolves. Heck, I was terrified of that guy. He was a slightly less scary version of Anthony Maddox.
Jolene pulled away from Luna Veronica and smiled before glaring at Alpha Maddox.
Instead of punishing her for the disrespect he chuckled and ruffled her hair. “Are you still mad at me?”
“Hell yeah! You haven’t even apologized. What you did was cruel and unnecessary. I expected something like that from Anthony but not from you. I’m disappointed.”
Is she… scolding him? Did he hurt my mate? My wolf and I got angry at the idea of my mate being treated cruelly. I felt a grumble come from my chest. Everyone turned and stared at me. I just growled at him. Great.
Jolene and the Luna chuckled and Alpha Maddox scowled. He slowly walked in my direction. He stood in front of me and put a hand on my shoulder. My whole body was tense.
“You…” His voice was low and menacing, but quickly changed to a happy one? I guess. “seem like a nice guy, and you are Jolene’s mate. Want to be friends with me?” He smiled and offered me his other hand.
I shook his hand. “Sure…”
“Great! Have a safe trip.” He gave me a side hug. “Please, help me make her forgive me. She is scary,” he whispered in my ear.
I turned to my mate to see if she had heard but she was too busy talking to Aiden. Yeah, her son that is my same age. That makes no sense. They have just four years of difference!
Alpha Maddox stared at me and then at my mate talking to her adopted son. “Her wolf adopted his wolf as hers when he was just a little boy. You know that wolves don’t age the same as us.”
“They don’t?” I whispered. I had never heard about that before. It is not written in any book in my pack’s library.
“In wolves, the more powerful the wolf becomes, the wiser. Biological age is not relevant. The human side either catches up with their wolf’s mental age or poison itself with greed.”
Jolene locked eyes with me and blew me a kiss. “Let’s go.”
She is much more affectionate now. Probably, because she is not scared of being sent to jail now.
An omega drove us to the airport. Our bags were already in the car, parked in front of the pack house. I was getting nervous. I wonder what Jolene is going to think about our pack. I hope she feels proud of how strong it is now.
