Chapter 10

“So, there are three ways to break a binding circle,”
Death leans back in his chair at the opposite end of the old uneven table that compliments the rest of this ancient place. His hands straighten the papers in front of him and his eyes read the messy handwriting on the page.
“The first way is to kill the person who initiated the circle. We can’t do that because you’re already dead. The second way is to get the ghost to move on. We can’t do that because you’re defective at the moment. The last way doesn’t apply to you,” He tells me.
I clasp my hands, squeezing them together. Death takes out a pen and begins marking certain areas of a document.
“Can you hand me the manual you used to summon me?”
“Sure,” I say, handing it to him. I twiddle my thumbs and bite my nails as he reads.
“Alright, we have no other choice but to force you to move on,” He says “The six steps I told you about, we need to do them,”
The single light above flickers and my breath hitches in my throat. Death raises his head and drums his fingers against the table. “The problem is that this will take a while and I have things to do,”
He tsks and peers at the book. “Let’s go over our limitations, shall we?”
His dark aura is so thick. It’s like I’m being examined for a job interview or being interrogated. I just want to leave. I want this to end.
“Excuse me?”
“Yes?” He says, putting the book down momentarily.
“What is a binding circle? You never explained it…”
He stares at me for a second. “Oh,”
Death tears a page from his notebook and places it at the halfway point between him and me. He draws two stick men and draws a circle around them.
“Okay, you did an advanced circle that only a few people can pull off and you apparently. Now, a binding circle binds two or more souls together. Our souls are connected, I am sure you can feel it,”
I don’t but I nod anyway. That little diagram was unnecessary.
“So, basically you infused us together and we’ll stay fused until you can move on,” Death says “Now, I can’t use my powers fully without you and we can’t be further than 300ft. That’s why we’ll need a plan,”
“A plan?”
“Yes, a plan,” He says, waving a stack of papers into existence. “You, Anwen, will pose as my assistant.”
I blink. What?
Death stands up. “Yes, yes, I know this sounds crazy but it must be this way. I’ve put a lot of thought into this and this is full proof.”
“An assistant,”
“Death’s assistant,” Death says, smiling with pride “None of my reapers can know you’re a ghost. They’ll think I’m some sort of fool who can’t reverse a spell of a human. My reputation will be ruined,”
There isn’t anyone in this old building. As we walked inside, the only thing I could hear was the harsh cold wind from the outside. Death, he might be a psycho.
I pull my arms to my side. “But there isn’t anyone here…”
“Oh no, this is just my hideout. All of my helpers are at Death Corporation, Death Corp. for short,”
My God, he is insane. Okay, Anwen, let’s just play along.
“So,” I draw out “Why wouldn’t your reaper friends understand a situation like this?”
