Scarlet POV
I didn’t want to do it.
I didn’t even believe a word I said.
But that’s what my job entails. I am a Reaper of the Justice Board. It is my job to carry out what they tell me to do. If they find out I oppose them, they’ll erase my memory again. I just got it back.
Anwen, from what I’ve seen and heard, is a great girl. She’s beautiful and is nice to everyone. All of the Reapers tell me that. I sigh glancing down at the obsidian calling crystal. I run my fingers over the smooth black surface.
Sucks. I really wanted to be her friend.
I exhale looking at the mass of wires. “That’s just the way it is,”
My job this time is to just mess with the Half-Bloods and show them their place. I don’t really see the point of “showing them their place”. Just let them do their own thing, you know? Why be so involved with people we don’t like. I can’t let them know that this is what I really think.
Anwen won’t die. I am willing to bet my life that Death will save her. That’s just the way Felix is. He’ll probably hate me even more after this. Anwen will hate me too. She already does, I think.
I bring the scissors under the giant red cord that powers the mainframe containing all the vital files to their Society.
Once again, I will painted evil again like the countless times I’ve been before. That’s what comes with doing the dirty work. It used to upset me before but I’ve learned to deal with it. I know what’s in my heart and that’s all that matters.
I close the scissors and the once lit basement of wires goes completely dark. The usual guilt boils in my stomach before rising to my throat. I pull my lower lip in to stop the tears before cutting a couple more of the back-up wires.
Someone always has to play the villain.
Death POV
What the hell is Anwen talking about in this letter?
She’s no longer an inconvenience and she has a lot on her plate? What does she have on her plate? What do I have on my plate? This makes no sense at all.
I mean, I think she’s telling me she wants us to be over but I won’t allow that. We are not over. She has to tell me to my face instead of this cowardly way. If she can do that, I’ll accept it but not through this half-ass letter with this many grammar mistakes.
I set it down more relieved than I thought. She did say she’s safe. That I needed to hear. I am glad that she’s somewhere safe, even if it is with those people.
I pick up the phone and try dialing the Half-Blood Society again. She did a terrible job concealing her location on this letter. She didn’t give an address but she used office paper with the logo of her division. She is the smartest stupid person I know.
Anyway, The Society keeps revoking my request to visit. I can see why with the way our company has been treating them but still. They are not even picking up their calls now. They were before.
There is a commotion outside of my office. There are shouts and curses outside that are loud and clear. Through my glass walls I can see that people from that night are marching through the crowd of Reapers wanting to rip them to shreds. The two look alikes barge into my office. I am about to give them a piece of my mind but their words have me confused.
“Where’s Anwen? We know you took her!” says the blonde one.
I recognize one of the people from the sketch Scarlet gave me. The tall nose, the build, everything checks out. Once the realization sets in, the rage comes after.
“What are you talking about? You were the ones that took her from me!” I tell them.
The blonde ones takes a step closer. “You took her back! She didn’t even want to come back. First you destroy the system we worked so hard for and now you kidnap Anwen! I am sick of you people! What did we do to you?”
“I don’t even know what you’re talking about! You have Anwen! I don’t have her. I have been trying to get in touch with her but I can’t get through to her! You have her!”
“We don’t have her!” The man says before pausing “You don’t have her?”
“No, you dimwitted idiot. I don’t have her… you don’t have her? She said she was safe. In division thirteen…” I reply.
The room goes quiet and the spectators outside of the glass gather around to hear better.
“You don’t have her…” The blonde starts. “We don’t have her… Did you cause our systems to break down?”
“I don’t even know what you’re talking about,” I tell them, chest heaving up and down.
“Axel, I think he’s telling the truth. Then where is she?” The blonde one asks the man next to him.
I interrupt them. “She’s missing?”
They look up and then avert their gazes. “Let’s just leave,”
“No, you two get back here. Anwen’s missing?” I say. I don’t mean to sound as concerned as I do.
They stop in their tracks, looking back. “Why do you care?”
My eye twitches. I seriously want to strangle these idiots to get the information I need.
I have to get Anwen back by whatever means.
I swallow my pride and bring my gaze back to theirs. “I need to come to your base,”
Axel blinks before laughing. “Why the hell would we let you go to our base? We can find her ourselves,”
“But do you have the resources? I have an entire department for cases like these. That system problem of yours can be fixed by my company easily. All I ask is to help and I can only help at your base,”
The blonde snorts. “Yes, and will you give us those resources? Will you really fix our systems to only help find Anwen?”
“Yes, I would,”
