Chapter 38

Death POV
So, this is where she stayed?
The room is small and antique. There’s scratches on the wall and paint stains on the floor. It looks more like a warehouse than a place to live. There are only two chairs, a table, and a twin sized bed. She said she was comfortable here?
“Why do you care for her? She just worked for you…” says the man named Lucas. I found out his name the other day.
He looks quite similar to Axel but his eyes are a pale kind of blue and his hair is blonde. He looks unreal with his movements and looks. He resembles a character out of a comic book.
Usually, I would be offended by such a question but I am tired. I can’t teleport to places I haven’t been to or places I haven’t been summoned to. So, I had to catch a flight all the way here. My men have already landed a few hours earlier to work on the main frame.
“Anwen was more than an assistant to me,” I admit. “It got complicated,”
Sofie enters the room and glances at the space in shock. “She lived here?! My poor friend! My poor comrade! Do you think she had to deal with mice?”
Sofie sniffles “What vile conditions. We must find her at once,”
Lucas eyes Sofie. “She’s a Half-Blood,”
“Gosh, you don’t say,” Sofie starts before making up Anwen’s unkempt bed. “I don’t care. Half-Blood, Blue Blood, Red Blood, Purple Blood, I don’t care. She is my friend,”
Lucas’s eyes widen at Sofie’s talk. He makes a slight face of approval before turning to me. He returns to his cold demeanor while speaking to me. “What about you? You made your attitude loud and clear at that Formal. Why do you care for Anwen?”
“I don’t need to answer you,” I retort.
“Yes, you do. She’s under my brother and I. We’re her guardians and it is our job to keep her safe no matter what. So it is my business to know what your intentions are with a ‘scum’ Half-Blood,” He says, taking a step towards me.
“That’s no way to talk to someone who just gave you all your resources to fix your little tech problem,”
“Who cut the wires in the first place? There was a Reaper there. We know that much. But enough of that? What do you want with Anwen? Why go through all this trouble for an assistant? It’s not like you two were…” Lucas cocks his head to the side.
Sofie pauses fluffing the pillows and twists her lips to the side before fixing the crooked pictures on the wall. Lucas watches all of this and tension in the room thickens.
“You two were a thing?” Lucas asks. “Is that what got complicated?”
I don’t answer and Sofie hyper focuses on tasks. Lucas glances at the two of us in shock before bursting into laughter. “A Reaper and a Half-Blood? Who knew? Damn, Anwen really is something,”
Sofie stands off in the corner watching the both of us. Lucas’s laughter dies down “You do know she’s really a Half-Blood? That scum of the earth you were talking about,”
“Yes, I do know. I can handle it,” I tell him.
“Can you? Do you even know what being a Half-Blood entails? Have you seen our curse?”
“Yes, I am well aware of you not being able to move on or stay alive,”
Lucas scoffs. “You think that’s the only thing? You really have no idea what we go through. You know what? Let me be honest. I don’t care what Anwen does with her love life but you don’t have what it takes to be the one she needs. She needs someone like her that understands,”
“Like you?”
“Hell no, she needs someone like Axel or someone else that gets the pain. You Reapers have your ‘lil problems but we go through hell. Do you know how it feels to die? Do you know how scary your last breath is? Even when you know you’ll resurrect, it’s the scariest thing every single time. Do you know how draining it is to get back? Those fucking steps?”
As he pours out his concern, I remember how much Anwen went through while she was doing the steps. She would often be out of breath and sweat. She’d even vomit and pass out after a while. I thought that was because of me but it’s been because of her curse all along.
“That’s not even the half of it,” Lucas spits out. “How can you be there for her if you don’t even know what she’s going through? If she wants you, fine, okay. But I’m going to tell her what I think, and leave it up to her,”
I stay silent but my mind is already thinking of the ways I can learn. He is right. It seems that I know nothing but I can learn and be the one she can rely on. She learned about my world when she honestly didn’t have to. If she can do that for me, then I can do that for her.
“I’m here to help,” I say finally “Just take me where you saw her last and my men can track her right away,”
Lucas nods composing himself. “Yes, that would be best. I don’t like you. Not in the least but I do appreciate your help. This doesn’t change things,”
“I know,” I say stepping aside “Lead the way,”
Lucas walks past me down the hall. Sofie and I follow him. The stares and the glares from people that pass by are out of place. I am not used to such behavior but it doesn’t unsettle me as we continue down the stairs.
As we descend down the stairs, we notice people crowding in the middle of the courtyard. There is a loud commotion and people yelling names. Lucas and I rush towards the crowd and push through.
“You Jackass!”
Another punch is thrown in the center of the circle. There are Half-Bloods and my trackers having a full on fight breaking vases and centerpieces. There’s blood on the floor from the fighters. The crowd goes quiet once they notice Lucas and I. They slowly back away and disperse but the fighters don’t get the memo. The warriors continue to grab at each other’s hair while trying to punch each other on the face.
This is going to be a problem.
