Chapter 40

Death POV
“We can track her by her crystal?”
“Yes,” Axel says, over a pile of scattered papers. “We have a weaker trail than you. That’s why we track crystals instead of the person,”
We smacked sense into both of our people. There is still tension but at least they’re working together. Both sides are listening to what our game plan is. As long as they are cooperating, I don’t particularly care about what they think about each other.
“So, how do we track her crystal?” I say, directing my attention to Axel.
“She has an obsidian crystal so a regular tracking circle might work,” He tells me.
“You can do circles?” I ask with an eyebrow raised.
Axel mirrors my expression. “Yes, we are half-reaper after all.”
Lucas cuts off his speech and stands at the table. He takes a fountain pen and dips it in ink. He draws a circle and puts three slashes on the right. He does the rest perfectly and dots in the middle. He taps the circle and it rises an inch above the surface of the mahogany surface. A red ribbon comes out the center and flows endlessly in a certain direction.
I am not aware of a tracking circle like this.
“Everyone come grab on to the ribbon,” Lucas says, grabbing onto it.
All of the other Half-Bloods do it without batting an eye. The rest of us hesitate. “What exactly is this and how does it work?”
“It’s a circle that tracks the crystal. Just grab onto the ribbon and close your eyes and it’ll take us to where the crystal is. Or as close as the ribbon can get us. Don’t you have a circle like this?” Axel asks.
“We have something but not exactly like this,” I admit, taking an end of the now infinite ribbon.
All of my reapers do the same looking at the circle in awe. Lucas snorts at our reactions before giving us more instructions. “Now, just close your eyes and go where the ribbon takes you. Just don’t think at all,”
Lucas does it and he disappears. Then, Axel disappears along with the rest of their side. My Reapers take a deep breath and do the same disappearing. I douse my anxiety doing what was told.
I open my eyes and my nose catches the smell of wet stone. We’re in a cave. I search left and right but there’s no Anwen. I glance at Lucas but his gaze is fixed on a smooth black crystal in his hand. “This is Anwen’s,”
“Did she leave it? Is she somewhere else in the cave?” asks a woman from my side.
“No, we never take off our crystals. Ever. I taught her that. I can’t sense her anywhere in here,” Lucas answers.
Axel pales and backs up.
“What’s wrong?” I ask.
They don’t answer me.
“I said, what’s wrong?” I repeat.
Axel clenches his jaw.
“Anwen, she’s not safe. There’s no way to find her without this. I could find her with a beacon but I didn’t teach her how to do that yet,”
“So how do we find her?” I ask.
Lucas’s eyes glass over. “I don’t know,”
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
“I can’t track her with my crystal. I can’t track her herself. Your Reapers can’t track her. We have her crystal the only thing we can track and she isn’t here. What else can we do? She really is lost,” Axel says, hyperventilating.
