Chapter 44

With a minute to spare, Sarah managed to snag a short yellow dress, a pair of ridiculously high, blue trashy heels — now she knew where Elly got those hot Catwoman sandals — and a bright pink blazer that smelled almost exactly like marshmallows.”Okay, time for our fashion show!!!!!” Elly called. The girls formed a line in the jewelry room, at the top of the dressing room stairs. They waited for Elly to call each of them down individually. Sarah studied the other girls’ outfits. Trish had pulled on what actually looked like a wedding dress. However, Trish insisted that Elly’s mother wore it as a ballgown to a film festival a few years ago.Ironically, Dalia, Kimber, and Layla looked somewhat similar. Each of the girls wore black and white colored clothing, though Layla’s long skirt had large red polka dots on it. As Sarah admired her reflection in a tiny hanging mirror, she was startled to hear an extremely loud crash from the dressing room below. The crash was quickly followed by Elly’s ear-splitting shriek. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?????” Elly yelled. Sarah and the other girls looked at one another in alarm. Kimber, who was closest to the stairs, called down to Elly. “Girl! Everything all right?”After a minute, they heard Elly’s loud, drunken laughter. “IT’S FINE! COME ON DOWN, KIMBER. YOU’RE UP FIRST!” Kimber shrugged her shoulders at the girls behind her. Then she disappeared down to the next floor. A few minutes later, Elly called Layla. Then it was Dalia’s turn, and finally Trish’s. Sarah struggled to hear what was going on below. An air purifier had started up and its noise drowned out the girls’ voices from below. She could just barely hear Elly’s ‘Oohs and Ahs’. Followed by a chorus of laughter. After what felt like forever, Elly called for Sarah. Sarah smoothed out her yellow dress. She made sure her right heel was actually fastened onto her foot. Stepping nimbly onto the narrow flight of stairs, she descended down to the main dressing room. A music track pumped soft rock songs from a speaker hidden within the wall. Someone had spritzed Chanel Number 5 perfume into the air. Its strong scent engulfed Sarah as she entered the lower level.A cloud of adorable airy bubbles from a small bubble machine danced around Sarah’s arms and shoulders. Sarah, still a bit tipsy from chugging half her drink, leaned back onto the stair rail in a very suggestive pose. “WHOAAAA, GIRLFRIEEEEEND! Work it out! Move that booty!” Elly yelled, happily. The group of girls applauded as Sarah did a slight bow, tossing her pearl emerald necklace for effect while Elly snapped pictures. Sarah slowly descended the stairs to the fluffy, Flakati carpet. As she did a final, silly pirouette for Elly’s camera, she spotted a pair of very familiar, very unexpected buttery brown eyes. Followed by a series of wolf whistles.
