Chapter 75

Bent gave her a lopsided grin. He took a swig from the bottle in his hand. “Like I said. I’m a terrible spy.” Sarah raised her eyebrows. “You’re spying on me?”Bent wiped his hand across his lips. “I was…I was just passing through.” He took another swig from the bottle. “A-and I saw. That guy. Kurl with you. So where’d he take you? A strip club in fantasy land?” Bent stepped up the stairs to the porch. He now stood directly in front of her. He wore a plain black shirt and black pants. And now that he was so close to her, his eyes also looked black. “You’re drunk,” Sarah said. She pushed him, albeit softly, away from her. “Come on. I want to know where he took you,” Bent said. He stepped closer to her. His musky cinnamon and clove scent engulfed her. It sent her heart into a frenzy. “Where?” he whispered, pressing himself firmly against her. Sarah’s back hit the door. She gazed up at him for several seconds. But then, finding the courage she didn’t know she had, she gently pushed him away again. “It doesn’t matter. What Kurl and I do is my business. You’re a player. Go play with your other girls.” She’d managed to finally get her key into the front door. The lock turned and the door opened. “Of course it matters,” Bent spat. “Kurl’s a douche. You should ditch the guy. He’s no good for you.” Sarah hurried into her house, trying to ignore him. She attempted to shut the door in his face. But Bent blocked the door easily with his arm. “Fine. Come on in then,” Sarah said, glaring. Bent stepped through the front door. She tossed her clutch and house keys onto the stairs. She made her way into the kitchen. Bent followed her. He placed his bottle on the kitchen table. Trash, who’d undoubtedly been asleep, came trotting into the room. Bent stroked the dog’s ears. But Bent’s lips remained curled in a snarl. His brown eyes watched Sarah from across the room.”Why are you going out with that jerk, anyway?” Bent growled. Trash yawned and trotted out of the room to find his doggy bed. Sarah watched the dog go. She didn’t want to look at Bent. “I like him,” she said simply. It was sort of true. She didn’t know Kurl well enough yet, but he was somewhat interesting to be around and he was definitely a looker. Bent snorted. “Yeah right. I don’t buy it.” He started to pace back and forth around her kitchen. “Okay. What do you like about him? Tell me. I sincerely want to know.” Sarah groaned. What nerve did he have being here like this? He’d had a perfectly disgusting afternoon with his wonder twins. If he wasn’t a giant who could crush her with his bare hands, she’d have thrown him out by now. “Too bad. You don’t GET to know!” Sarah said, almost yelling. Bent whirled around. “Well I WANT TO! TELL ME!” he snarled. His face was getting red. And she could see his jaw and fists were more clenched now than ever.
