Chapter 107

Bent quickly pulled Sarah up close to him. “Do you know how to foxtrot?” he whispered.Sarah’s heart hammered against her ribcage. “Foxtrot? You mean we have to do an actual dance? I thought we were just going to talk to everyone, or something!”Bent laughed again. “Nope. It’s just the two of us…and the entire country now.”Sarah inhaled her breath. She forced herself to recall the dance lessons she’d taken from her middle school years in cotillion.Foxtrot. Okay, you’ve got this. Two steps slowly back. Then a quick side step. Bring both feet together. The manager cleared his throat. “You may begin now!” he said.Bent placed his warm hand on her back. He took her right hand in his. “You know we have to make this look real, right?” he said.Sarah was shaking so hard, she wasn’t sure she could stand. “Yeah. Okay. What do you want me to do?” she hissed, trying not to have her face reveal just how freaked out she was.”It’s simple. Act like you love me,” he said.It was impossible to read his face with a mask on.Sarah took a deep breath.Calm down. You’re acting like a fool! she thought. Just dance. People want to see you DANCE!She tried to ignore the dimming lights and the hot spotlight that burned into her back. She cleared her mind.Memories floated before her eyes. She recalled seeing Bent climbing out of his car the first time. She’d had no idea who he was. Her only thought was that she had to know him.She pictured Bent’s bare back glistening as he’d stormed around her kitchen. And the way he’d held her. She leaned closer to his body, her mouth inches from his. She’d tasted his soft lips. She knew the feel of his tender tongue. With a sigh, she allowed him to envelop her completely in his arms. Their bodies, cemented together, moved ever so slowly across the floor. He touched her face with his fingertips and let his hand trail down her cheek. Lifting her chin, he blew hot air against the sensitive parts of her skin. She shuddered. Her body followed his lead instinctively.Back, back, side step. Close. Back, back, side step. Close. Their feet moved as one as they waltzed in what was now a thick fog smoke around the floor. The music sounded as if it were coming from miles away.Sarah felt her eyelids grow heavy. Her heart was practically bursting out of her chest with the emotions she’d been trying so hard to suppress. And then Bent, whisper-quiet, began to sing. “How are you so beautiful…in the moonlight? Can’t you hear my heart…beat’s song?”Sarah’s head started to spin. His lips brushed the tip of her ear, sending sweet chills over her skin.Bent had sung to her before in his gym. But, this time, his voice sounded even more achingly tender. And it tore through her.”What is romance? What is a love song?” Bent sang. “Holding you in my arms tonight, let’s dance the whole night long.” His words caressed her soul. Sarah’s head dropped onto Bent’s chest. She closed her eyes, willing the night to go on and on, forever. As the music slowly faded and the audience roared with glee, Sarah distinctly heard Bent’s last words of his song before they parted.”We are meant to be. You were meant for me.”
