Bent avoided speaking to her most of the week. By Thursday, she had gotten used to seeing his back in the hallways. It seemed he was around but not around at the same time. He was always near her, never talking or looking in her direction. The last time they’d had any kind of interaction was that Monday morning in the parking lot. ***After Coach Mars released the girls from field hockey practice, Sarah followed Elly and Erin into the locker room to shower. “You both have to come cheer with me,” Elly said, pulling her ponytail scrunchie from her hair. “Cheer for what?” Sarah asked absentmindedly. She tugged off her cleats and dropped them into her gym locker. Erin slammed her locker shut, wrapping herself in a towel. “The guys’ varsity soccer team is playing Parkson High tonight.”Oh, right. Parkson High. It was one of the larger public high schools in a town about an hour away in North Ridge. Public high school teams were always a challenge to private schools since their coaches could recruit so many talented students. Sarah shrugged. “Sure, why not. Will be good to cheer on Trevor. Can’t believe he’s keeper now.” Elly rolled her eyes. “Aaaaand Bent! That boy needs so much attention.” Sarah tried not to think about Elly’s choice of words. That would only make matters worse in her mind. When the girls were done showering, they quickly dressed into their spare clothes. As Sarah dug through her sports bag, she realized she’d left her change of pants at home. She only had an extra T-shirt.She was about to ask one of the other girls for a spare pair of pants, but to her surprise, they’d already left! “ERIN! PAM! Elly!” she called. Maybe one of the girls was still in the shower? She listened hard, hoping she’d hear voices from one of her teammates. But to her dismay, there was only silence. This CANNOT be happening! she thought. She yanked her shirt down. It stretched to the middle of her thighs. She remembered there was a lost and found bin right outside the locker room, in the tiny hallway that led out to the gym. There were always heaps of unclaimed clothes and shoes.Sarah peeked out of the locker room door. She looked left and right. The coast was clear! She darted across the small hallway towards the lost and found bin. Grabbing up piles of clothes, she hastily began to sort through everything. But there didn’t seem to be anything in her size. A ton of random sneakers and sandals scattered about the floor around the bin. To her disbelief, most of the clothes were double XLs of men’s multi-colored pairs of shorts. There was no way she could ever wear those. They didn’t even have drawstrings! And to make matters worse, some of the clothes smelled as if they hadn’t been washed in MONTHS. Come on, isn’t there at least a long skirt or skinny pair of pants here? Sarah thought wildly.
