Bent and Sarah landed on a bed with a soft thud. Above them, Sarah could see the secret panel close. She would have never known it was there if she hadn’t just fallen through that opening. She lay back against the pillows and gazed around, feeling slightly dazed. They were in Bent’s golden room that she’d stayed in her first night at his house.Only now, the windows were dark instead of filled with blazing hot sunshine.Sarah tried to sit up, but Bent tugged her back down onto the mattress.”Cozy?” he asked, his voice teasing. Sarah wanted to say yes, but she’d never admit that. A knock sounded on the door. Bent sat up suddenly, releasing Sarah’s waist. “Enter!” he called. The door slid open. Erna stood like a resolute soldier, her blue-lit eyes blinking. “The dogs are here, Mr. Prince,” she stated, matter-of-factly.”Send them in,” Bent said. He dropped back down onto his bed.Erna stepped back to reveal four long furry snouts. The dogs pushed through the door and sat in a row against the wall. When they spotted Sarah, the dogs started to whine. “Oh jeez,” Bent groaned. “You know they won’t quiet down until you say ‘hi’ to them.”Sarah bit her lip, hiding a smile, and got up off the bed. She noticed a small red pill and a glass of water were on the bedside table. She picked up the pill and water and handed them to Bent. “I think Erna left these for you.” He rolled onto his side and squinted at her hand. “Man, I could’ve used this an hour ago!” He tossed the pill into his mouth and downed the glass of water. “What’s the medicine for?” she asked. He stretched out on the bed, wrapping his hands around the top of the golden headboard. “My friggin’ sore nose,” he said. “It should heal in a few minutes.” Sarah raised an eyebrow. “I think it might take longer than that,” she said.Bent didn’t say anything. He set his empty glass on the bedside table near him, closing his eyes. He looked like he was about to fall asleep. Sarah approached the dogs. She could see there were four separate dog beds spread around the floor. Along the opposite wall were several dog toys, most of which looked chewed up. The dogs whined louder as Sarah bent down to pet them. She rubbed each of their furry faces and kissed each of them on their soft heads. “Such good boys,” she said.”Do they sleep up on the bed with you?” she called. She craned her neck around and saw that Bent was peeking out at her from under the pillow on his head. “Uh…yeah.”Sarah got up from the ground. “That’s so cute.” She checked her phone. “It’s getting late. What time do I have to wake up tomorrow to go to the airport?”Bent glanced at his flashing watch. “Ridiculously early. You should get to sleep soon.” Sarah’s insides felt like they were tangled together. She couldn’t believe he would sleep in the same bed. Or would he? Bent flipped off the bed and made his way to the bathroom. “Come on, I’ve got stuff so you can brush your teeth.”Sarah pushed her nervous thoughts from her mind and made herself be brave. She followed him into the gleaming, immaculate bathroom. He reached inside the mirrored cabinet and handed her a brand new toothbrush that was still in its packaging. She opened it and held it out for him to add toothpaste. He also added toothpaste to his own toothbrush. He then went to work on his teeth. Sarah had to focus really, really, REALLY hard to not study their reflections in the mirror. He was still wearing almost nothing and if she blushed now, she’d look like a total wuss. She tried to imagine he had the head of a T-Rex dinosaur. Watching him perform such an innocent, childlike routine, was almost enough to make her choke up. Luckily his bathroom had two sinks so she wasn’t forced to spit out the toothpaste into the same sink. But no sooner had she rinsed her mouth, he leaned over and spit his nasty toothpaste into her sink. She stared at it, somewhat dumbstruck. “That’s disgusting!” she said, pinching her nose so she wouldn’t snort. Bent stepped closer to her. He used his thumb to rub a smudge of toothpaste off of her chin. “You missed a spot,” he said. His eyes were now a deep milk chocolate, and the lights above them made them look slightly golden. Sarah had to shut her own eyes when he touched her to keep herself level-headed. He’s T-Rex! He’s T-Rex! He’s T-Rex! She felt him move away from her to take a sip from the tap water. “Where am I sleeping?” Sarah asked softly. She held her breath, waiting for his answer.
